Solar Hot Water
Water heating accounts for about 30 percent of an average household's total greenhouse gas emissions and about the same proportion of total household energy use. By installing a solar water heater, you can greatly reduce your energy bills, as it will use energy from the sun to heat water at zero cost.
Using solar energy to heat water produces no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. A solar water heater can provide between 50 percent and 90 percent of your total hot water requirements, depending on the climate and the model of heater.
The upfront cost of a solar water heater (including installation) is higher than electric or gas water heaters but the energy bill savings will compensate for this over time (an average of about 5 years). A solar hot water system is a great long-term investment that has a guaranteed return and will provide you with hot water generated free by the sun.
A solar hot water system provides the following benefits:
- It will reduce your home's production of carbon dioxide by as much as 20%.
- Solar can meet 60% or more of your hot water requirements.
- Solar hot water can save at least 30,000 kWh in 10 years.
- Solar hot water will reduce the emission of CO2 by approximately 3 tonnes per year.
Boost your Solar Hot Water System!
Solar hot water systems can be coupled with gas to provide 100% of your water usage. This is probably the most efficient method of having constant hot water in your home, keeping in mind that you should select an energy-efficient gas system.
By gas-boosting your system you will have hot water for your home 24 hours a day and, by positioning the solar hot water panels to maximise solar contribution, you will have a very efficient system for all your hot water requirements.
